Chan Master Zangyong of Changqing on Mt. Yishan in Fuzhou. The Master went up to the hall. The assembly gathered. The Master threw a fan onto the ground and said, 'A fool calls gold earth; what does a wise person do? The younger generation is to be held in awe; you cannot entirely cling to foolishness. Is there anyone? Come forward and say something.' Then a monk stepped forward, bowed, and stood back. The Master said, 'What else?' The monk said, 'May the Master clearly discern.' The Master said, 'A thousand-year peach pit.' [A monk] asked, 'What is the saṅghārāma?' The Master said, 'Changxi and Putian.' The monk said, 'Who is the person within the saṅghārāma?' The Master said, 'The clear water of Silla.' [A monk] asked, 'Who is the true master of Lingquan?' The Master said, 'The southern mountain and the northern mountain.' [A monk] asked, 'What is the Master's house style?' The Master said, 'Before the noon meal, the kitchen steams southern white rice; after noon, the stove boils tea from the Northern Garden.' [A monk] asked, 'Does the Dharma-body still experience suffering or not?' The Master said, 'How could hell be heaven?' The monk said, 'Then it does experience suffering.' The Master said, 'What offense is there?'
