Chan Master Huilian of Zhangjiang in Hongzhou. When the Master first opened his hall, a monk asked, "In the past, the Brahmā king invited the Buddha out of a mind to uphold the Dharma. Today, purple-robed dignitaries attend the assembly; I do not know how the Master will deliver them." The Master said, "I do not carry out anything else." The monk said, "Why do you not carry it out?" The Master said, "Where have you been?" [A monk] asked, "The Master mounts the jeweled seat, accommodating the present occasion. The fourfold assembly gazes up; please, Master, guide them." The Master said, "In what way have I wronged you?" The monk said, "If that is so, then you bestow the gate of compassionate skillful means and straightaway do not fail anyone." The Master said, "You must also take it in properly." [A monk] asked, "What is the environment of Zhangjiang?" The Master said, "Kṣitigarbha knits his brows." [The monk] asked, "What is the person in the environment?" The Master said, "Samantabhadra tucks up his sleeves." [The monk] asked, "What is the water of Zhangjiang?" The Master said, "Bitter." [The monk] asked, "What is the primary phrase of Zhangjiang?" The Master said, "When you go elsewhere, do not cite it mistakenly."
