Chan Master Daoxi of Bao'en Monastery in Zhangzhou. Early on, he and Baofu delivered a letter to Grand Defender Wang in Quanzhou. The Grand Defender asked, "Has the upādhyāya of Zhangnan been helping people of late?" The Master said, "If I say he helps people, that wrongs the upādhyāya. If I say he does not help people, that wrongs the Grand Defender's question." The Grand Defender said, "Speak a phrase, and I will wait until an iron ox can graze on grass and a wooden horse can hold smoke in its mouth." The Master said, "I borrow a mouth to eat rice." After a good while, the Grand Defender asked again, "Did you come by donkey or come by horse?" The Master said, "Donkey and horse do not take the same road." The Grand Defender said, "How did you arrive here?" The Master said, "I especially thank the Grand Defender for understanding the words." A monk asked, "Setting aside names, words, and wonderful phrases, I ask the Master for the real truth." The Master said, "I do not hinder your intention in coming."
