Chan Master Minghui, Upādhyāya Ying of Yonglong Monastery in Fuzhou. The Master went up to the hall and said, "You say you got up at daybreak, yet there are travelers who walked by night. Similar it may be, but right it is not. Take care." [A monk] asked, "Why is a person of non-action and no-business still bound by the golden chains?" The Master said, "Because of cutting off coarse and fine; the precious is difficult to retain." [The monk] said, "Why is it said that a person of non-action and no-business is truly carefree and happy?" The Master said, "Because of clamor and confusion, he must be sent away for the time being." A monk came for an interview; the Master said, "I do not need so many varieties! Speak quickly, speak quickly!" The monk had no reply. The Master once instructed the assembly, saying, "The sun rises at the hour of the rabbit; where it is used, there is no need to generate skillful contrivances." [A monk] asked, "How does one advance to reach the fundamental source?" The Master said, "Rely upon it and practice it."
