Upādhyāya Jingqin of Xingfu Cloister on Mount Shuangfeng in Shaozhou, Chan Master Huizhen Guangwu, was a native of Yizhou. He received his training at Heishui Temple on Mount Dongxi in Emei. Traveling around and aspiring to the Way, he joined Yunmen's Dharma assembly and secretly received his instruction. Thereupon he opened the mountain and founded the cloister, which gradually became a monastery. On the day of opening the hall, Upādhyāya Yunmen personally attended to witness and confirm it. A monk asked, "What is the great meaning of the Buddha Dharma?" The Master said, "Only when the sun rises does one know the realm is bright; without oil, how can the lamp before the Buddha be lit?" [The monk] asked, "What is the realm of Shuangfeng?" The Master said, "At night, hearing the water flow past the bamboo behind the hermitage; by day, watching the clouds rise above the mountain in front." [The monk] asked, "What is the sword of the Dharma King?" The Master said, "A lead knife makes vain displays; it is not equal to Longquan." [The monk] said, "What about the one who uses it?" The Master said, "Even hiding the blade's edge is not permitted; how much less bearing the exposed blade!" [The monk] asked, "When Piṇḍola receives offerings in the four continents, does he reach them all or not?" The Master said, "Like the moon entering water." [The monk] asked, "What is functioning without confusion?" The Master said, "Before the bright moon hall hangs jade dew; in the crystal palace pearls are scattered." A practitioner asked, "When I encounter robbers coming, if I kill them it violates the Buddha's teaching, but if I do not kill them it violates the king's decree. What is the master's opinion?" The Master said, "Officially not even a needle is admitted; privately carts and horses pass through." Liu, ruler of Guangzhou, once personally questioned him on the essentials of the Dharma. In the third month of the second year of Taiping Xingguo, he admonished his disciples, saying, "I will depart this world before long; you may prepare a tomb and stupa on the peak of this mountain in advance." On the twenty-third day of the fifth month, the construction was completed. The Master said, "I shall depart at midnight the day after tomorrow." When the time came, he gathered Upādhyāya Shuang of Yunmen, Elder Shunfeng of Wenmen, and others, seven people in all, for a night conversation. The attendant reported the third watch. The Master called for incense, burned it, joined his palms, and passed away.
