Chan Master Yunzhen of Mount Ehu in Xinzhou. A monk asked, 'What is the Buddha?' The master said, 'You, ācārya, are not.' The master asked a monk, 'Where did you leave recently?' He said, 'The two Zhe [regions].' The master said, 'Did you bring along the hair-severing sword?' The monk spread out both hands. The master said, 'I took you for an immortal of the rotted axe handle, but turns out you are just a gambler.' He asked, 'What is the house style of Ehu?' The master said, 'The guest is the appearance of the host.' [The monk] said, 'In that case, I thank the master for his gracious hospitality.' The master said, 'It is difficult to lower the couch of Chen Fan.'
