Chan Master Huiji of Mount Huanglong in Ezhou was a native of Qinghe, surnamed Zhang. During the Tianyou era of the Tang, he traveled and transformed [beings], arriving at this mountain. The military commissioner donated his stipend to build a Dharma hall and memorialized the throne to bestow a purple robe and the title Great Master Chaohui. He broadly opened a Dharma assembly. A monk asked, 'Not asking about matters on the side of the ancestors and Buddhas, what is an ordinary matter?' The master said, 'I have lived on this mountain for fifteen years.' He asked, 'What is the master's house style?' The master said, 'A lapis lazuli alms bowl without a bottom.' He asked, 'What is the sovereign's sword?' The master said, 'It does not harm the myriad kinds [of beings].' He said, 'What about the one who wears it?' The master said, 'Blood spatters the heavens of Brahmā.' He said, 'A fine 'does not harm the myriad kinds'!' The master struck him. He asked, 'When the Buddha was in the world, he taught the Dharma for sentient beings; after the Buddha passed away, has anyone taught the Dharma or not?' The master said, 'Shame on the Buddha.' He asked, ''A hair swallows the vast ocean; a mustard seed contains Mount Sumeru.' This is not the student's fundamental task. What is the student's fundamental task?' The master said, 'Sealing the covered tray and opening it in the marketplace.' He asked, 'Earnest and pressing, I turn to you; please, master, communicate the news.' The master said, 'Fire burns the sash of the skirt—fragrant!' He asked, 'What is a person of great doubt like?' The master said, 'Sitting face-to-face, the bow in the dish falls into the cup.' He said, 'What is a person without doubt like?' The master said, 'Sitting again, the bow in the dish falls into the cup.' He asked, 'How is it when the wind is calm and the waves are still?' The master said, 'At the tip of a hundred-foot pole, a five-ounce weight hangs.' When the master was about to pass away, a monk asked, 'A hundred years from now, who will take away the alms bowl and sack?' The master said, 'Let anyone take them as they will.' He said, 'What about the matter inside?' The master said, 'Only when the seams burst open will you know.' He said, 'What kind of person obtains it?' The master said, 'Wait until the sea swallows thunder; then I will tell you.' Having spoken, he entered quiescence.
