A monk asked, 'What is the environment of Yunju?' The master said, 'What do you call the environment?' [The monk] said, 'What is the person within the environment?' The master said, 'What did I just say to you?' Later, the master resided at Ximing Cloister in Quanzhou. Imperial Commissioner Liao entered the cloister, saw the offerings before the portrait of Upādhyāya Fayan, and asked, 'What fruit is this before the portrait?' The master said, 'Fake fruit.' The Imperial Commissioner said, 'Since it is fake fruit, why make an offering of it to the true portrait?' The master said, 'I only want the Imperial Commissioner to recognize what is fake.' [A monk] asked, 'What is the Buddha?' The master said, 'His countenance is most wondrous.'
