Chan Master Qixin of Yanyang in Wuning, Hongzhou. A monk asked, "How does one escape the three realms?" The master said, "Do you still have faith?" The monk said, "I have deep faith; I beg for the Upādhyāya's compassion." The master said: / "Just this faithful mind spans antiquity and the present; / Quickly you must investigate it, why hesitate in thought? / If you wish to escape the three realms, the three realms are mind only." / On account of snow, the master addressed the assembly, saying: "Sthaviras, do you still see the snow? If you see it, you have eyes; if you do not see it, you have no eyes. Having eyes is eternalism; having no eyes is annihilationism. Understanding in this way, the Buddha body is all-pervading." A monk asked, "This student is taking leave to go to Letan. I beg the Upādhyāya to show me a path of entry." The master said: / "A fine path of entry: / The mind of the Way is firm and solid. / Follow the assembly in asking for instruction, / Follow the assembly in manual labor. / If you want to go, then go; / If you want to stay, then stay. / Between going and staying, / There is no other reason. / When you arrive at Letan, / Pay my respects to Mazu."
