Chan Master Jin of Guxianyuan in Zezhou. The Master tested a monk, saying, "The Tathāgata's steadfast and secret body appears within a single particle of dust. What is this steadfast and secret body?" The monk raised a finger. The Master said, "If it appears, then it appears; how do you understand it?" The monk had no words. Later, while attending on [Fayan] Jinghui, the Master saw him ask a monk, "Since leaving here, what places have you been to and come back from?" The monk said, "I crossed into the mountains of the south." Jinghui said, "Not easy." The monk said, "In vain I traversed all those mountains and rivers!" Jinghui said, "All those mountains and rivers are not bad either." That monk had no words. At these words, the Master had a great awakening. A monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The Master said, "It bumps right against your nostrils."
