26.19

Chan Master Shoune of Shanglanyuan in Hongzhou ascended the hall and addressed the assembly, saying, "When the guidelines are fully upheld, there is no one left to sweep the floor. Let the brothers of the monasteries bear witness together. Let those of the younger generation who have doubts come forward and ask." A monk asked, "Wishing for the gate of sweet dew to be opened, one should contemplate the supreme truth, falling neither into existence nor nonexistence. We pray the Master will deign to provide guidance." The Master said, "Let the great assembly bear witness." The monk said, "If so, then I have been wronged." The Master said, "Idle words." He asked, "What is the Buddha?" The Master said, "Who else would you ask?"
