Chan Master Faxian of Longshou was a native of Jinjiang County in Quanzhou. His surname was Shi. When his mother, Lady Liao, first conceived him, she suddenly developed an aversion to meat and pungent roots. When he grew up, he was relinquished to Bodhi Cloister of Kaiyuan Temple in his home prefecture to leave household life and take the precepts. He went to Zhangzhou to call on Upādhyāya [Wu]yi and attained the essential principle. Prefect Chen Hongxian requested him to open the hall and assume the abbacy (the third generation to reside at Longshou). Entering the hall, he addressed the assembly, saying, "Today Longshou appears in the world. The Buddhas of the three periods and the myriad dense phenomena simultaneously appear in the world and simultaneously turn the wheel of the Dharma. Do all of you see it?" A monk asked, "What is the realm of Longshou?" The Master said, "There is no place for you to plant your feet." [The monk] said, "What is the person in the realm?" The Master said, "You do not yet know the realm." There was a monk who arrived to consult him. On the next day he entered the abbot's quarters to request the Master's mind-essential. The Master said, "Yesterday we met and inquired after daily welfare; / Today we meet again and the matter is still as it was. / Why do you instead seek to have the mind-essential presented? / How could the mind-essential be specially estranged?"
