In the summer, the sixth month of the seventh year of the Kaibao era (jiashu), the Master showed signs of illness and bade farewell to the assembly. At that time, a monk asked, "In the past, the Tathāgata's correct Dharma was personally transmitted to Kāśyapa; I wonder, after the upādhyāya's hundred years, how are we to comprehend your profound tradition?" The Master said, "Where did you see Kāśyapa come from?" [The monk] said, "If so, then we shall faithfully receive and uphold it, never forgetting this purport." The Master said, "The Buddha Dharma is not this kind of principle." Having spoken these words, he passed away sitting. He was sixty-four years of age, with forty-four rains retreats. After the cremation, his tongue did not decay, remaining supple like a red lotus petal. It is enshrined today in Samantabhadra Bodhimaṇḍa. Because Elder Li's explanatory commentary on the Avataṃsaka was profound and vast in its purports, the Master combined it with the sūtra to make one hundred and twenty fascicles, carved printing blocks for it, and circulated it throughout the realm.
