Chan Master Youchan of Bore Temple on Mount Tiantai was a native of Lin'an in Qiantang. He left home in his childhood. At Langzhan Courtyard on Dongshan in his home county, he was ordained. Hearing of the flourishing teaching of the State Preceptor of Tiantai, he traveled from afar to his abbot's quarters and was secretly sealed in the mind-ground. First he was ordered to dwell at Puxian Courtyard on Yunju, where monks gathered together. King Zhongyi of Wuyue granted him the title Chan Master Ciwu. He moved to dwell at the upper temple, where the assembly filled to five hundred. A monk asked, "The sound of the drum has just stirred, and the great assembly gathers like clouds. We request the master to raise and chant the transcendental vehicle of the ancestral school." The master said, "What do you lack?" The monk said, "If so, then everyone receives the grace completely." The master said, "Do not speak nonsense." In the third year of the Yongxi era, he entrusted the monastic assembly to his tonsured disciple Longyi to succeed him in opening the Dharma. Early in the Chunhua era, he manifested extinction, and was buried on his home mountain.
