Chan Master Yilong of Yuquan in Fuzhou ascended the hall and said, "The mountains, rivers, and the great earth are all in the eyes of everyone here. Why do you speak of understanding and not understanding?" At that time a monk asked, "The mountains, rivers, and the great earth are in the eyes. To whom would the master now point as the refuge?" The master said, "Only because the sthavira's destination is distinct and clear." The monk said, "If I had not come up to raise this question, how would I know that skillful means are not exerted in vain?" The master said, "Vaguely resembling a tune, it is barely fit to hear, / Yet again it has been blown by the wind into a different melody."
