29.12

Awakened understanding is itself Bodhi; / Comprehending the fundamental, there are no steps or stages. / Lamentable are the stooped ordinary people; / At eighty they cannot run on their feet. / In vain they pass an entire life in emptiness, / Unaware of the passing of sun and moon. / Looking upward at their teacher's mouth, / They are just like infants who have lost their milk. / Monks and layfolk gather in grand crowds, / All day long listening to his dead words. / Not contemplating the impermanence of their own bodies, / Their mental conduct is as greedy as wolves and tigers. / Pitiful is the narrow inferiority of the two vehicles, / Insisting on subduing the six viscera, / Not consuming alcohol, meat, or the five pungent roots, / Looking with deviant eyes at others eating and chewing. / There are further those of wild, heterodox practices, / Cultivating qi and abstaining from salt and vinegar. / If one awakens to the ultimate truth of the Supreme Vehicle, / There is no need to discriminate male and female.
