Chan Master Tancui of Mount Zhong in Jinling was a native of Wu Commandery with the surname Gu. When he first visited Great Master Rong of Niutou, the great master looked at him, regarded him as extraordinary, and said to him, “Forms and sounds are deadly poison to the unborn; sensation and perception are pitfalls to the perfected person. Do you know this?” The master silently examined it and had a great awakening to the profound purport. Soon after, he concealed his traces on Mount Zhong for many years, ending his old age in a thatched hut with earthen vessels. On the sixth day of the second month in the third year of the Tianshou era of the Tang, he calmly entered samādhi, and after seven days passed away. He lived sixty-two years.
