Chan Master Zhifeng of Mount Zhongtiao in Hezhong Prefecture had the surname Wu. At first, he studied the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi-śāstra and was stuck in names and characteristics. Being questioned by a spiritual friend, he was provoked to indignation and stopped lecturing. Wandering abroad, he climbed Mount Wudang. Meeting Master Xiu, his doubts were suddenly resolved. Desiring to nourish the holy embryo, he took his leave, dwelling on Mount Anfeng at Pujin. For no less than ten years, he ate wild fruit and drank from the streams. The prefectural governor, Wei Wensheng, invited him to return within the city walls and built the Xin'anguo Cloister for him to dwell in. Monastics and laypeople took refuge with him, coming and going in an endless stream. The governor asked, "How will it be for me after today?" The Master said, "The sun rises from Mengfan, / Shining on the tree, completely cast without a shadow." The governor at first could not understand; clasping his hands and bowing, he withdrew. After a short while, he was enlightened and felt unburdened and self-possessed. The Master went to and from Mount Zhongtiao for over twenty years, and those who attained his Way were beyond count. After his extinction, his disciples built a stūpa north of the prefectural city.
