Chan Master Zhihuang of Hebei initially attended the Dharma seat of the Fifth Patriarch. Although he sought determinations, he adhered to gradual practice. Later, he went to Hebei, built a hut, and sat constantly for over twenty years without showing any sign of indolence. When he met Chan Master Ce, a disciple of the Sixth Patriarch traveling there, Ce stimulated him to diligently seek the Dharma essentials. The Master then abandoned his hut and went to call on the Sixth Patriarch. Pitying his coming from afar, the Patriarch immediately bestowed opening and resolution. Upon his words, the Master was broadly awakened; the mind he had attained in the previous twenty years vanished without a trace. That night, the patrons, literati, and commoners of Hebei suddenly heard a voice in the sky saying: 'Chan Master Huang has attained the Way today!' Later, he returned to Hebei to guide and transform the fourfold assembly.
