Chan Master Zhitong of Shouzhou was a native of Anfeng in Shouzhou. Early on, he read the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra more than a thousand times, yet did not understand the three bodies and four wisdoms. Paying homage to the Master, he sought an explanation of their meaning. The Patriarch said: "As for the three bodies: the pure dharmakāya is your nature; the perfect sambhogakāya is your wisdom; the hundreds of millions of nirmāṇakāyas are your actions. If one speaks of the three bodies apart from the fundamental nature, it is called having bodies without wisdom. If one awakens to the three bodies as lacking self-nature, it is called the bodhi of the four wisdoms. Listen to my gāthā:"
