The unexcelled great nirvāṇa / Is completely luminous, constantly quiescent and shining. / Fools and the ignorant call it death; / Non-Buddhists grasp it as annihilation. / Those of the two vehicles who seek it / Regard it as unconditioned action. / All these belong to conceptual reckoning, / The roots of the sixty-two views. / Falsely establishing fictitious names, / How could they be the true meaning? / Only the person who exceeds ordinary measure / Penetrates thoroughly without grasping or rejecting, / Knowing that the dharmas of the five aggregates / And the self within the aggregates, / The diverse forms and figures appearing outwardly, / And each and every mark of sound, / Are universally equal like a dream or illusion, / Not giving rise to views of ordinary or sage, / Not making an understanding of nirvāṇa, / Cutting off the two extremes and the three periods of time. / Constantly responding to the functions of the sense-faculties, / Yet not giving rise to the thought of functioning; / Discriminating all dharmas, / Yet not giving rise to thoughts of discrimination. / Even when the fire of the kalpa burns the ocean bed / And winds beat mountains against each other, / The bliss of true constancy, quiescence, and extinction— / Such is the mark of nirvāṇa. / I now speak forcefully / To cause you to abandon heterodox views. / Do not understand according to my words, / And I will permit that you know a small part.
