Chan Master Fahui of Letan in Hongzhou asked Mazu, "What is the meaning of the Ancestral Master's coming from the West?" Mazu said, "Lower your voice and come closer." The Master then stepped forward. Mazu slapped him once and said, "Six ears cannot plot together. Come tomorrow." When tomorrow came, the Master entered the Dharma hall again and said, "Please speak, Upādhyāya." Mazu said, "Go away for now. Wait until this old fellow ascends the hall, then come out, and I will give you certification." The Master was thereupon enlightened and said, "I thank the great assembly for the certification." He then circled the Dharma hall once and left.
