When Upādhyāya Shijiu first visited Mazu, [Mazu] asked, "Where have you come from?" The Master said, "I come from Wujiu." The Patriarch said, "What words and phrases does Wujiu have these days?" The Master said, "How many people here are completely at a loss!" The Patriarch said, "Put aside being at a loss for a moment; what about a phrase of utter quietude?" The Master then stepped forward three paces. The Patriarch said, "I have seven blows of the staff to send to Wujiu; would you take them willingly?" The Master said, "After you, Upādhyāya, take them first, then I will accept them willingly." He then returned to Wujiu.
