When the upāsaka was about to enter extinction, he had his daughter Lingzhao go outside to observe the time of day and report when it was noon. The daughter hastily reported, saying, "The sun has already reached the zenith, but there is an eclipse." While the upāsaka stepped outside the door to look, Lingzhao straightaway ascended her father's seat, joined her palms, and passed away sitting. The upāsaka smiled and said, "My daughter was sharp and swift!" Thereupon he prolonged [his life] for seven more days. When Governor Yu of the prefecture came to inquire after his illness, the upāsaka told him, "I ask only that you empty all that exists; beware of treating as real anything that does not exist. Farewell; all things in the world are like shadows and echoes." Having spoken, he rested his head on the governor's knee and passed away. His final instruction was that his remains be cremated and discarded. Monastics and laypeople throughout the rivers and lakes mourned in grief, saying that the Chan Gate's Upāsaka Pang was indeed the Pure Name of Vaiśālī. Over three hundred poems and verses of his are transmitted in the world.
