10.33

福州白鹿山仲豫禪師。開堂日問答罷。師乃曰。設使言中辯的句裏藏機。意思交馳並同流浪。何故吾祖之道豈其然乎。若是上根作者。獨步丹霄臨機大用。把住涓滴不漏。放行乃浪涌千江。踞地全威壁立千仞。得不英靈自己荷負宗門。直饒恁麼未稱衲僧。且道衲僧有甚麼奇特。良久曰。深秋簾幕千家雨。落日樓臺一笛風。下座。

Chan Master Zhongyu of Mount Bailu in Fuzhou. On the day of opening the hall, when the questions and answers were concluded, the Master then said, 'Even if you discern the target in speech and conceal the dynamic in phrases, with thoughts racing, they all amount to wandering astray. Why? Could the Way of our Patriarchs be like this? If you are an adept of superior capacity, you walk alone across the cinnabar clouds and exert great function when facing circumstances. Holding fast, not a drop leaks out; letting go, waves surge across a thousand rivers. Squatting on the ground in complete authority, standing like a wall a thousand fathoms high, how could one not gallantly shoulder the ancestral lineage by oneself? Even so, this does not yet match a patch-robed monk. Tell me: what is extraordinary about a patch-robed monk?' After a pause he said, 'Deep autumn behind screens: rain upon a thousand households; the setting sun on pavilions: wind carrying a single flute.' He stepped down from the seat.
