11.25

婺州智者山利元禪師。上堂拈拄杖曰。大用現前不存軌則。東方一指乾坤肅靜。西方一指瓦解氷消。南方一指南斗作竄。北方一指北斗潛藏。上方一指築著帝釋鼻孔。下方一指穿過金剛水際。諸人面前一指成得甚麼邊事。良久卓一下曰。路上指奔鹿。門前打犬兒。

Chan Master Liyuan of Mount Zhizhe in Wuzhou. Ascending the hall, he picked up his staff and said, "When the great function manifests before you, it preserves no rules. One point to the east, and heaven and earth become solemn and still. One point to the west, and tiles shatter and ice melts. One point to the south, and the Southern Dipper flees. One point to the north, and the Northern Dipper hides away. One point upward, and it strikes Śakra's nostrils. One point downward, and it pierces through the diamond water boundary. When pointing before all of you, what sort of business is accomplished?" After a long pause, he struck once with it and said, "On the road, pointing at a running deer; before the gate, beating the puppy."
