Senior Monk Faming of Kaiyuan in Xingzhou. He relied on Baoben for a short time and deeply attained the Dharma forbearance. Later he returned to his home village, lived a dissolute life, became addicted to drinking wine, and gambled with dice. Whenever he was dead drunk, he would sing several songs of Liu [Yong], making this his daily habit. The villagers insulted him; if invited to a vegetarian feast he refused, but if invited to drink he followed along. He lived like this for more than ten years, and everyone pointed at him and called him the 'Drunken Upādhyāya.' One day he said to the monastery assembly, "Tomorrow morning I must depart. Do not go anywhere else." The assembly secretly laughed at him. The next morning, he gathered his robes, took his seat, and shouted loudly, "I am going! Listen to a verse of mine." Hearing this, the assembly rushed to look. The Master then said, "Throughout my life I stumbled in drunkenness, / yet in drunkenness I still possessed discernment. / Where will I sober up from wine tonight? / Upon the willow bank, in the morning breeze and fading moon." Having finished speaking, he fell silent. When they shook him, he had already sloughed off the mortal coil.
