11.35

洪州上藍院光寂禪師。上堂橫按拄杖召大眾曰。還識上藍老漢麼。眼似木𣔻口如匾擔。無問精粗不知鹹淡。與麼住持百千過犯。諸禪德。還有為山僧懺悔底麼。良久曰。氣急殺人。卓拄杖下座。

Chan Master Guangji of Shanglan Monastery in Hongzhou. Ascending the hall, he held his staff horizontally, called to the assembly, and said, "Do you still recognise the old fellow of Shanglan? Eyes like wooden mallets, mouth like a carrying pole. Without asking of fine or coarse, he knows not salty or bland. Operating as an abbot in such a way brings hundreds of thousands of transgressions. Venerable Chan monks, is there anyone who will repent on behalf of this mountain monk?" After a long pause, he said, "Short of breath, killing people!" He tapped his staff and stepped down from the seat.
