11.63

杭州南山興教院惟一禪師。僧問。佛未出世時如何。師曰。白雲數重。曰出世後如何。師曰。青山一朵。問如何是道。師曰。刺頭入荒草。曰如何是道中人。師曰。乾屎橛。曰大耳三藏第三度為甚麼不見國師。師曰。脚跟下看。曰如何得見。師曰。草鞋跟斷。

Chan Master Weiyi of Xingjiao Cloister on Nanshan in Hangzhou. A monk asked, "How was it before the Buddha appeared in the world?" The Master said, "Several layers of white clouds." The monk said, "How was it after he appeared in the world?" The Master said, "A single peak of green mountains." He asked, "What is the Way?" The Master said, "Plunging one's head into wild weeds." The monk said, "Who is the person within the Way?" The Master said, "A dried shit-stick." The monk said, "Why did the Tripiṭaka Master of Great Ears fail to see the National Teacher the third time?" The Master said, "Look under your heels." The monk said, "How can one get to see him?" The Master said, "The heel-strap of the straw sandal snaps."
