廬州長安淨名法因禪師上堂。天上月圓人間月半。七八是數事却難算。隱顯不辨即且置。黑白未分一句作麼生道。良久曰。相逢秋色裏共話月明中。上堂。祖師妙訣別無可說。直饒釘嘴鐵舌。未免弄巧成拙。淨名已把天機泄。

Chan Master Chang'an Fayin of Jingming in Luzhou ascended the hall: "In heaven the moon is full; among humans it is mid-month. Seven and eight are numbers, yet the matter is difficult to calculate. Concealment and manifestation not yet distinguished may for now be set aside; before black and white are divided, how can a phrase be spoken?" After a long pause, he said, "Meeting within the autumn colors, chatting together under the bright moonlight." He ascended the hall: "The Patriarch's wondrous directive has nothing else to be spoken of. Even with an iron tongue and nailed lips, one still cannot avoid making a mess trying to be clever. Jingming has already leaked the celestial secret."
