Chan Master Chongyun of Guanghui in Luzhou. A monk asked, "What is the realm of Guanghui?" The Master said, "Ancient cypresses embrace misty verdure; tall pines carry snowy chill." The monk said, "Who is the person within the realm?" The Master said, "A bottle of pure water, a cage of candles; a boy reciting sūtras, a monk sitting in meditation." He then said, "The ocean of the nature of the dharma-realm cannot be observed by the three realms; the gate of the Dharma of liberation cuts off even a single dust particle from being seen. Because spiritual natures are not equal and capacities differ, the buddhas appear and establish teachings according to conditions—adapting to capacities and responding to conditions in tea shops and wine houses, or roaming free and easy through willow lanes and flower alleys. All various activities enter the ocean of sarvajñā (all-knowledge). To speak like this shames the ancient sages. Have you not seen the ancient saying: 'Upon the lump of red flesh, it stands like a cliff a thousand yards high'? How will you advance a step from atop a hundred-foot pole?" After a long pause, he said, "Letting go of hands to arrive home, nobody recognizes him; not a single thing remains to offer to the venerable hall. Take care."
