和州開聖覺禪師。久參長蘆有所得。遍遊叢林至五祖演禪師會下。演問。釋迦彌勒猶是他奴。他是阿誰。師曰。胡張三黑李四。演深喜之以語悟首座。悟云。恐未實。更須搜看。演後復問師。釋迦彌勒猶是他奴。他是阿誰。師曰。胡張三黑李四。演云。不是不是。師曰。昨日是今日因甚不是。演云。昨日是今日不是。師始大悟。後出世開聖開堂。法嗣夫禪師。於燒香之際。忽如有物搗其胸。因成瘡未幾而化。

Chan Master Jue of Kaisheng in Hezhou. He trained for a long time under Changlu and had an attainment. Touring widely among the monasteries, he arrived under the assembly of Chan Master Yan of Wuzu. Yan asked, "Śākyamuni and Maitreya are still his slaves; who is he?" The Master said, "Hu Zhang the third, Hei Li the fourth." Yan was greatly pleased and told Head Monk Wu about it. Wu said, "I fear it is not genuine yet; you still must probe him further." Yan later asked the Master again, "Śākyamuni and Maitreya are still his slaves; who is he?" The Master said, "Hu Zhang the third, Hei Li the fourth." Yan said, "Not right, not right!" The Master said, "Yesterday it was right; why is it not right today?" Yan said, "Yesterday it was right; today it is not right." The Master only then experienced great awakening. Later he appeared in the world to open the hall at Kaisheng, becoming the Dharma heir of Chan Master Fu. At the time of burning incense, suddenly something seemed to pound his chest; because of this, an ulcer formed, and before long he passed away.
