12.60

潭州玉池光教寺冲儼禪師。僧問。以心傳心無說可說即不問。如何是可說。師曰。石筍逢時長。僧云。未審意旨如何。師曰葵花向日開。問如何是祖師的的意。師曰。泥牛不喫欄邊草。僧云。和尚何處安身立命。師曰。直向孤峯頂上眠。

Chan Master Chongyan of Guangjiao Temple at Yuchi in Tanzhou. A monk asked, "Transmitting mind with mind, having nothing that can be spoken, I do not ask about; what is that which can be spoken?" The Master said, "Stone bamboo shoots grow when the time comes." The monk asked, "I wonder, what is the meaning?" The Master said, "Sunflowers open toward the sun." The monk asked, "What is the exact meaning of the Patriarch?" The Master said, "The mud ox does not eat the grass beside the railing." The monk said, "Where does the Upādhyāya settle body and life?" The Master said, "Directly sleeping atop the solitary peak."
