溫州僊巖景純禪師。僧問。德山棒臨濟喝。和尚如何作用。師曰。老僧今日困。僧便喝。師曰。却是爾惺惺。

Chan Master Jingchun of Xianyan in Wenzhou. A monk asked, "Deshan's blow of the stick, Linji's shout—how does the upādhyāya function?" The Master said, "This old monk is tired today." The monk then shouted. The Master said, "Yet you are alert and clear."
