12.81

安州法興期禪師。僧問。學人無問請師不答。師曰。鯨意吞舟騰巨浪。人無消息過滄溟。僧云。恁麼則落二落三。師曰。饒君解致千般問空自言多道轉賒。

Chan Master Qi of Faxing in Anzhou. A monk asked, "The student has no question; I request the Master not to answer." The Master said, "A whale intent on swallowing a boat stirs up huge waves; a person with no news crosses the vast blue sea." The monk said, "If so, then it falls into the second or the third." The Master said, "Even if you were able to pose a thousand kinds of questions, vainly speaking many words only puts the Way further off."
