Chan Master Yingcheng of Yingtian Wanshou on the Southern Peak. When he first visited Master Sui, Sui asked, "Where has the Venerable come from?" The master said, "I come from Piling." Sui said, "I hear Piling produces good grass-and-insect fans. Did you bring one?" The master drew a circle and said, "What does a great kalyāṇamitra need this for?" Sui said, "Only this is also needed here." At these words, the master had a great awakening. Later he resided at Yingtian Wanshou. He instructed the assembly, saying: "Mountain flowers in disarray let down Śūnyamūrti; mountain grasses spreading apart present Śrī. Startling the mountain deity into bowing his head, and the earth god into paying homage. The iron ox of Shan Prefecture has no place to roam; the stone statue of Jia Prefecture reveals its whole body. Many misunderstand such words. May I ask you all: how do you speak a phrase that involves neither spring nor autumn?" After a pause, he said, "Without the spring wind, flowers do not bloom; when flowers bloom, they are blown off again by the wind." He gave a shout.
