13.30

桂州壽寧齊曉禪師。僧問。大眾雲臻合談何事。師曰。波斯入鬧市。僧云。恁麼則草偃風行。師曰。萬里望鄉關。又問。如何是佛。師曰。著衣喫飯。僧云。叉手當胸退後三步。師曰。醉後添盃。示眾曰。觸目不會道。猶較些子。運足焉知路。錯下名言。諸仁者。山僧今日將錯就錯。汝等諸人。見有眼聞有耳嗅有鼻味有舌。因恁麼却不會。良久曰。武帝求仙不得仙。王喬端坐却昇天。喝一喝。

Chan Master Qixiao of Shouning in Guizhou. A monk asked, "The great assembly gathers like clouds; what should be discussed?" The master said, "A Persian enters the busy market." The monk said, "In that case, the grass bends and the wind blows." The master said, "Gazing ten thousand li toward the home village." He also asked, "What is the Buddha?" The master said, "Wearing clothes and eating food." The monk said, "Crossing the hands before the chest, stepping back three paces." The master said, "Adding a cup after being drunk." He instructed the assembly, saying: "Meeting the eye without understanding the Way is still a bit closer; moving the feet without knowing the road is mistakenly applying words. Good people! This mountain monk today follows mistake with mistake. You people: seeing has eyes, hearing has ears, smelling has a nose, tasting has a tongue—why do you still not understand?" After a pause, he said: / 'Emperor Wu sought immortality but did not become an immortal; / Wang Qiao sat upright and ascended to heaven.' / He gave a shout.
