13.35

江陵護國齊月禪師。僧問。壁立千仞水泄不通。還許學人請益也無。師曰。汝待問什麼。僧云。向上事。師曰。維那不在。僧云。觸忤和尚。師曰。正令已行。乃曰。窮外無方究內非裏。應用萬般無可比擬。分明向汝諸人道。佛性精魂總不是。

Chan Master Qiyue of Huguo in Jiangling. A monk asked, "Standing like a wall a thousand fathoms high, letting no water leak through—is the student still permitted to seek instruction or not?" The master said, "What do you intend to ask?" The monk said, "The matter of transcendence." The master said, "The karmadāna is not present." The monk said, "I have offended the upādhyāya." The master said, "The true command is already in effect." He then said: / 'Exhausting the exterior, there is no direction; investigating the interior, it is not inside. / Applied in myriad ways, it has no equal. / I tell you all clearly: / Buddha-nature and the refined soul are neither of them it.'
