Chan Master Qingzhao of Shenggshan on Mount Longmen in the Western Capital. A monk asked, "Transforming an ordinary person into a sage is not asked about; what about turning iron into gold?" The master said, "Directly in the selfless place, whatever meets the eye radiates full brilliance." The monk said, "Clear radiance arises in the palm; joyful energy shines between the brows." The master said, "Since you can know your own principle, why bother with bitter babbling?" He also asked, "Heaven is high and earth is thick; the myriad things all comply. Does the upādhyāya comply or not?" The master said, "When spring arrives, flowers bloom profusely." The monk said, "The golden rooster returns to the azure sky; the jade rabbit [traverses] the vast emptiness." The master said, "Only when the Way is shared does one know." The monk said, "The student receives your grace today." The master said, "For now, do not mistake it."
