Chan Master Yanshan Huiming of Lingyin in Hangzhou. A monk asked, "What is the Way?" The master said, "Is the Way far away?" The monk asked, "What is the one truly correct road?" The master said, "Not a single thread or hair can pass." The monk said, "Then I shall follow it and practice." The master said, "Do not run about recklessly."

He ascended the hall and said, "If I give the venerable monk a single thread of a path, then how will you uphold and debate the Buddha Dharma? If it is kept completely watertight, then it will cause the venerable monk to have no place to settle body and establish life. Right at such a time, even if the Patriarchs and Buddhas were to poke their heads out, they too would deserve twenty blows of the stick. In speaking like this, does the mountain monk still have any fault? Have you not seen: when the World-Honoured One was born, he walked seven paces in each direction, looked around at the four quarters, pointed one hand to heaven and one hand to earth, and said, 'Above heaven and below heaven, I alone am the Honoured One.' Yunmen said, 'Had I seen him at that time, I would have struck him dead with one blow of the stick and fed him to the dogs! Why so? In order to seek peace for the whole world.' Now tell me, in Yunmen speaking like that, is there Buddha Dharma truth or not? Even though it is so, Yunmen possessed only one eye. You have been standing a long time; take care."
