Upāsaka Sun of the Ministry of Justice: Chan Master Yangqi Hui came to visit him just as he was directly observing trials and judgments. The gentleman said, "I am entangled by royal affairs; by what means can I escape them?" Yangqi pointed and said, "Do you understand?" The gentleman said, "I hope the Master will point it out." Yangqi said, "This is the Ministry official's vast and profound vow to benefit and save living beings." The gentleman said, "I wonder, how is this so?" Yangqi instructed him with a verse, saying: / "Responding, you manifest the body of an official, / Vastly extending a deep and compassionate vow. / Where you re-examine cases on behalf of others, / Under the rod, the blood is dripping wet." / The gentleman had an awakening at this.
