Chan Master Puqin of Wanshou in Suzhou ascended the hall and said, “Outside worldly things, being of no use, one simply rests when old. / The dream substance of the Gandharva city—both are vast and drifting. / Why do illusory affairs come pressing in, / Forcing this idle body to be unfree?
“Yet for one who leaves home, benefiting things comes first. Inheriting the great guidelines of the former ancestors, continuing the lamp of wisdom for a thousand ages, the wondrous Dharma of the single mind is called the gate of dhāraṇī. Those who attain it do not establish steps or gradations, suddenly equaling all sages; those who lose it will not recover for dusty kalpas, vainly toiling their bodies. Or when gain and loss are both forgotten, and feelings of ordinary and sage are exhausted—precisely at such a time, it is not mind, it is not buddha, it is not a thing. I venture to ask all you venerable Chan monks, what on earth is it? If you are unrestrained and distinct right here, you will be able to stride alone across the great universe, thrust your body across the three realms, and grasp the diamond precious sword to shatter the demon armies of birth and death.”
After a long pause, he said, “Zha!”
