Chan Master Faguang of Guangfa on Mount Nan in Hangzhou. A monk asked, 'Xuefeng ascended Touzi three times and went to Dongshan nine times. Why did he lay down his weapons and strip off his armor?'
The master said, 'When principle is superior, one submits.'
[The monk] said, 'I wonder what Xuefeng attained?'
The master said, 'One blow of the stick, one welt.'
[The monk] asked, 'What is the intended meaning of fire burning the mountain in the twelfth month?'
The master said, 'If it does not encounter flowing water, it should still cross over to another mountain.'
The monk said, 'The student does not understand.'
The master said, 'When spring comes, the grass grows again.'
He then said, 'Question and answer between host and guest do not yet touch the superior vehicle of the lineage; within the gate of establishing transformation, they are temporary provisions. Even if every word corresponds and every phrase matches the dynamic, in the lot of patch-robed monks, this is far, far off. Just as today the bright clouds are dark and the high mountains and deep waters—how do you understand the principle of expounding and raising it? Do you understand yet? This mountain monk cannot avoid adding mud over earth, to reveal a hint further for you: / High and low crags and peaks are seen layer upon layer; / The pavilion doors are opened, everywhere penetrating. / If you wish to understand the exact meaning within this: / Majestic radiance glitters, pervading the vast sky. / Take care!'
