16.11

蘄州五祖曉常禪師。僧問。如何是宗乘中事。師曰。動唇吻得麼。問如何是正法眼。師曰。揀擇得麼。問如何是法身。師曰。道汝不會得麼。問蓮華未出水時如何。師曰。看不見。僧云。出水後如何。師曰。清香滿路。上堂曰。一念信心一念佛。念念更非是別物。六門出入豈神通。一道光明無軌則。行亦行坐亦坐。或語或笑非兩箇。目下若也認得渠。青山萬里無寸草。

Chan Master Xiaochang of Wuzushan in Qizhou. A monk asked, 'What is the affair within the ancestral vehicle?' The Master said, 'Can you move your lips?' He asked, 'What is the eye of the true Dharma?' The Master said, 'Can you choose?' He asked, 'What is the Dharma body?' The Master said, 'Can you say that you do not understand?' He asked, 'How is it before the lotus emerges from the water?' The Master said, 'It cannot be seen.' The monk said, 'How is it after it emerges from the water?' The Master said, 'Pure fragrance fills the road.' Ascending the hall, he said, 'One thought of confident faith is one thought of Buddha; / Thought after thought, it is never anything else. / Do the exits and entrances through the six gates count as spiritual powers? / A single track of bright light has no rules. / Walking is walking, sitting is sitting; / Talking or laughing, they are not two. / If right now you recognize this one, / For ten thousand li of green mountains there is not an inch of grass.'
