Chan Master Chaonai of Mount Dengyun in Guizhou. A monk asked, 'I do not know, how does one ascend the clouds?' The master said, 'Shouldering a staff across one's back, paying no heed to others.' The monk said, 'The mountain is high, rugged, and steep; how does one climb it?' The master said, 'Go straight toward the thousand peaks and ten thousand peaks.' The monk said, 'Is this where you help people?' The master said, 'Look beneath your feet.' The monk said, 'Thank you, master, for your instruction.' The master said, 'Steep!' He added, 'Mount Dengyun is exceedingly rugged and steep.' After a long pause, he said, 'This mountain monk stumbled on level ground today.' He stepped down from the seat.
