Hermit Zhizhi of Guizong on Mount Lu was a native of Linjiang. In his prime, as a bhikṣu, he relied on Huanglong, and at Guizong he apprehended the profound purport. He had a verse that said: "Before arriving, one must indeed arrive; / Once arrived, it makes one laugh. / Eyebrows are fundamentally useless, / Yet without them, where would the charm be?" Shortly after, Nan retired, and Zhi submerged himself among the assembly. One day, after communal labor ended, he wrote a verse: "Tea shoots, fragile and soft, have just left the roasting tray; / Bamboo sprouts, in a frantic hurry, spit through the mud again. / In the mountain cottage, the year's spring affairs are settled; / Having found leisure, who cares if the bench-ends are low?" Because of this, patch-robed monks sought his company. Displeased, the master built a thatched hut on the highest peak and composed a verse: "A single room atop a thousand peaks: / Half a room for this old monk, half for the clouds. / Last night the clouds departed with the wind and rain; / In the end, they are not as idle as this old monk."
