Chan Master Keying of Changguo in Fokü, Taizhou. A monk asked, "What is the great meaning of the Buddhadharma?" The Master said, "As soon as the single disk emerges from the sea, all myriad lands are bathed in its grace." [The monk] said, "This student does not understand." The Master said, "Just because it is exceedingly clear, in turn, what you attain is delayed." [The monk] asked, "What is the environment of Fokü?" The Master said, "Spring returns along a single path, elegant before the cliff; / The snow is spent on several peaks, cold beyond the clouds." [The monk] said, "Who is the person within the environment?" The Master said, "At night, the pewter staff knocks against the moon over frosted crags; / In the morning, the bronze pitcher rinses in mist over the azure pool." He then said, "The spring breeze drifts gently, and all myriad things harbor fragrance. The old peasants among the groves sing songs; the fishermen upon the river raise their oars. Mountain blossoms array their splendor, while bank willows cast down their shade. Orioles warble in the tall woods; beasts call in the secluded valleys. Where white clouds part, thousands of peaks overlap in towering majesty. The myriad streams pay homage to their source, vast billowing waves embracing the moon. The myriad phenomena appear everywhere, all forms observed together; south, north, east, and west crisscross and mutually reflect. Layer upon layer of Indra's net, projecting forms across billions [of worlds]; the ocean-seal samādhi radiates light, responding universally to the great. Such talk as this—there is no one who does not know it all. But tell me, how is it with the single phrase that confounds oneself?" After a good while, he said, "Sudden thunder in the heavens startles the universe; / The frog at the bottom of the well does not lift its head."
