Chan Master Jurun of Lin'an in Hangzhou. A monk asked, "Opening the hall for the nation on this day, with what Dharma will the Master benefit humans and devas?" The Master said, "I had taken you for a clever patch-robed monk." The monk said, "A stick of renowned incense wishes longevity to the sagely emperor." The Master said, "How is today's business?" The monk was speechless. The Master said, "You irritate someone to death!" [A monk] asked, "Pure and fundamentally so, pervading the sands of the realms—why does the person inside the hut not know of the affairs outside the hut?" The Master said, "It ought to be so." The monk said, "I specially extend my request for further instruction." The Master said, "What loss is there?" He then said, "Great assembly, just look! The ancient sages of the past carried their sacks and bore their bowls, leaving one monastery and entering another community. If they did not attain an entry point, day and night unremittingly they consulted and inquired of kalyāṇamitras. Bumping against things and stumbling, suddenly catching a glimpse, only then did they know that a knife is made of iron. Putting it down all at once, they would then join the collective work at Tiantai and roam the mountains at Nanyue; turning left and turning right, they did not abide in the ground of confusion. Worthy practitioners, since the ancients understood it like that, what is lacking today?" After a good while, he said, "Much emptiness is not as good as a little reality."
