Chan Master Puyue of Danxia in Dengzhou ascended the hall and said: "Before Majestic Voice, who could discern the truth? After Dīpaṃkara, who is an intimate knower? Even if you undertake it on that side, you will inevitably split it into two halves; even if you practice on this side, you must still fail to achieve total perfection. For indeed, sealing the mouth at Vaiśālī was already leaking the heavenly secret; even if one closes the chamber at Magadha, seams and cracks must ultimately break open. Do not say that the essence reveals true constancy; it must be purely clear, free of any blemish. What need is there to speak of skin shedding away? Naturally it alone functions in solitary clarity. Although fresh like this, it still does not match the spirit of a patch-robed monk. Only when the five eyes open together and the three lights thoroughly illumine will the thread on the fishing rod naturally avoid stirring the waves. One must understand shifting the position and turning the function before one can enter the marketplace with open hands. Therefore it is said: 'Even if hair grows on your teeth, do not let your eyes gaze upon it.' If you recognize it, empty flowers become confused and disorderly; if you speak of it, the path of words becomes tangled. Since it is like this, I venture to ask you all: how do you speak a phrase that does not brush against the blade?" After a long pause he said: "In the middle of the night, the tortoise's eyes open wide; / When dawn arrives, the myriad phenomena are all of one color."
