Chan Master Purong Daoping of Zhihai in the Eastern Capital was a native of Chuzhou. Ascending the hall, he said, 'This mountain monk does not understand the Buddha Dharma; my dealings with people are entirely without reason. Sometimes half open and half closed, sometimes completely released and completely held back. Just like in a crowd of ten thousand people, coldly tossing a stone: suddenly hitting one, only then knowing it flows everywhere.' Ascending the hall, he said, 'Zhaozhou has four gates; gate by gate connects to the great avenue. Yuquan has four roads; road by road leads through to Chang'an. Gate by gate connects to the great avenue—in the end, who personally arrives? Road by road leads through to Chang'an—clearly take a step forward and look.' He slapped his knee once and said, 'At year's end, a traveler not yet returned; / The west wind outside the gate is cold.' Ascending the hall, he cited Panshan instructing the assembly: '"Like the earth holding up a mountain, unaware of the mountain's steep solitude; like a stone containing jade, unaware of the jade's lack of blemish." The ancient's words were very much like holding stolen goods and crying of injustice! Under Zhihai's gate, everyone is gallant: capturing tigers and rhinos alive, seizing ferocious dragons in the flesh. Within the eyes, Mount Sumeru can be placed; within the ears, the great ocean water can be contained.' He then picked up his staff and said, 'It is not boasting of my tricks to others; / A great hero's demeanor ought to be like this.' Striking his staff, he stepped down from the seat.
